Twitter Talk

by Greg on September 16, 2009

default_profile_6_biggerTwitter continues to be a topic of much conversation, at least in a few of the circles I hang out in. This doesn’t mean, however, that everyone understands Twitter… just that they’re talking about it.

I listen and try to figure out where the confusion lies (and, of course, learn a lot in the process). I love demystifying and helping people get a better picture of social media in general and, in these conversations, Twitter in specific. And I love askign questions, too.

And now I’m asking y’all if there are any aspects of Twitter you have questions about that we can dive into here at the Happy Accident. If you do, please feel free to email me or leave a comment. I’d prefer the latter, by the way, because then someone else reading here might give a great answer I can learn from, too!

So feel free to ask, publicly or privately, and let’s see what answers we can come up with to help make Twitter more effective for all of us.

Dear Greg,

Are there ways I can better manage my friend lists? Sometimes I can’t remember someones Twitter handle (?) but searching through lots of friends is tedious. It would make it easier to find them … and to add similarly minded folks to tweets of interest.

Me again … what is the etiquette of editing a retweet to make it fit those 140 characters?

Terry – if you use a client like TweetDeck instead of Twitter.com, you can sort your friends into “groups” (not unlike Facebook these days). So, you could set up a group of folks who tweet about literacy, for example, or children’s literature. This would make it easier to find a tweeter of interest, though you’d have to remember where to look. In terms of letting you quickly come up with a list of other folks who might be interested in a tweet, grouping helps a lot. To date, I have not found a tool that lets me search my own follower list (alphabetically, by activity, etc.) though there are many tools to search Twitter at large. (P.S. I’ll ask on Twitter to see if others know of one!)

RT Etiquette? Sounds like a post topic to me! I will get something together today or this weekend. Great questions, Terry. And thanks!
