The Silence of the Blogs

by Greg on July 21, 2010

One week! That’s how long it’s been since I’ve posted on either of my blogs. I’ve gone that long before, I’m sure, but this one was an unannounced silence. That’s new for me.

Was it an expected break? Nah. Could I have gotten a post up? Perhaps, but I didn’t (clearly!). Whenever something like this happens, I always review it to see if there are any useful takeaways for me. So…

The good news is that I was reminded that the world wouldn’t end if I didn’t blog. The bad news is that I was (and still am) incredibly frustrated by the fact that I wasn’t blogging. Neither of these are surprises to me, though.

In looking at the situation more closely, I could’ve seen this coming – I was at a conference (with no free wifi) and had a busy “life” schedule – so my big takeaway is that I should have prepared better. What would that look like?

I had some unfinished posts I could’ve spent time polishing. I could have written and scheduled extra posts in advance, too. I could have gotten some guest bloggers to offer up great content. I could have put up a post about being busy.

Any and all of those choices probably would have made me happier… which leads me to my biggest takeaway: pull myself out of the details of each post and look forward and be realistic about how blogging will fit in during any upcoming period.

Of course, life can always throw you a curve or you can simply gauge a situation wrong. Then, at least, we know that life will go on! But this time, I hope… lessons learned.

Remember your post about the rule of 3? Wendie Old and I did a session on blogging at our regional SCBWI conference last Sun. and one of our tips was: * Set a blogging schedule. OTOH, Greg Pincus uses the rule of three: “If I try writing a post three times in a day and each time fails, I put it aside for another day.” And we did link your name to this website. Our handout is posted on the MD/DE/WV blog http://aseraserburns.wordpress.com. Thanks for your help — we gave you lots of verbal credit as the guru of kidlit blogging as well as several mentions on the HO.
