The Case of the Inflated Tweet Count

by Greg on February 5, 2010

I do tweet a lot, it’s true… but a couple days ago my tweet count multiplied by three or more. Turns out, I’m not alone: here’s the Twitter support thread where you can report if you, too, are affected.

Twitter says this is a low priority bug, as it doesn’t affect people using the site. True enough.

I wonder, though, how many people look at the number of tweets when making a decision to follow someone? I know in the past I have seen people with 100 followers and 10,000 tweets and had a moment of “hmmm, will this person clutter my stream?” thoughts.

In the end, I make my following decision based on the content of someone’s tweets, not the number. I like to think everyone does that at first… and unfollows if someone truly does tweet too much for comfort.

It’s a funny but to see, though. And I wish it were impacting my bank account instead!

Hi Greg,
Thanks so much for having explained this bizarre occurrence :) I was wondering why my number of tweets seemed to have tripled overnight…
Best,
Dorlee

It is a peculiar bug. My count also seems to have tripled, though I’ve read that others have done more. Odd. Very odd. You’d think, too, it would be a simple fix… but apparently not!

Thank your for the tip. It makes me wonder about my account, but the truth is I have no idea how many tweets I’ve sent in the universe since I opened it… 300 do seems like a lot though… :)
