Sleep With Your Top Commenter!

by Greg on March 10, 2010

Do you know the number one commenter at your blog? You should. And I think you should be sleeping with that person every night… because it should be you.

If you invite people over to dinner at your home, you’re not going to let them do all the talking. Your blog’s no different. You want to be a good host.

So, when people talk… respond. Let ‘em know you’re listening and engaged. You can use comments to add more to what you’ve written and to keep conversations going.

On a certain level, being active in your comments is a little like serving dessert. And speaking for myself, at least, I like to hang out where there’s dessert. Don’t you?

Greg,
Great post! As a blog reader, I enjoy reading the blogs that have engaged hosts. It’s much more fun when you know that the blog writer is going to leave you a comment back. I read a few blogs with a huge number of followers, but I rarely leave a comment on them. I did when I first started reading them, but the hosts didn’t leave responses to my question or comments. I still enjoy reading their blogs, but I guess I’m high maintanance and need to be responded to. :) I’m sure it has something to do with time. I get between 5 and 25 comments a day on my blog. I can’t imagine what I would do if I got a hundred in one day. I’m going to link to this tonight on my post.

Well, I don’t know that every comment needs a reply, in general. And certainly when you get 100 comments on every post, something’s gotta give. But even there, I think the important thing is to be visible in the comments somewhere. It shows you’re involved and actually do care about what others are saying beyond yourself.

I look forward to us both grappling with the 100 comments a day issue :-)

I’ve notice some people with huge followings and comments respond occassionally throughout the day,but don’t respond to everyone. I look forward to having the dilema of how much time can I devote to commenting. I enjoy the conversations that take place on my blog, so I guess if I get a hundred comments I’ll sleep less. :)

Greg,
Just discovered Sharon’s blog which linked here, and really like this one too! I like how you describe commenting on your own blog. And yes, if you say more and interact it makes it fun for everyone. I’m putting you on my sidebar.

I so agree a blog should be a conversation between the blogger and the visitor. A blog without a dialogue is a dead blog.. Enjoy reading your blogging ideas

I always try to reply to comments. It lets visitors know there’s someone behind the domain name looking for interaction.

Also, if you think about how lonely some people are, if they realize they can get a personal response, they’re more likely to comment, then return to comment on new content. Hopefully, this leads to a faithful following you can profit from.

I tend to find it more fun when it’s a back and forth, too. And fun doesn’t mean it’s not instructive or illuminating or anything else. It’s like a bonus addition!
