Mark All Read

by Greg on March 1, 2011

One of my favorite things about reading blogs in my reader  (I use Google Reader) is that when time is tight or when I fall behind, there’s a wonderful button called Mark All Read. I click that… and I magically have no blogs left to read! It can be a great reliever of pressure, let me tell you.

Now, I prefer to get back to “inbox zero” the natural way.  I read a lot of blogs every day. I think it’s important to stay on top of the news in my areas of interest… to see what friends are doing… to stay involved in the community at large.

Yet, I don’t believe that reading other blogs every day is a responsibility. Of course, I don’t like to miss news on days when I don’t read, but I also firmly believe that if there’s something folks want me to know, they’ll find a way to tell me, and not just mention it on a blog or in a Facebook update or a single tweet into their stream.

Yes, social media is a great way to get information to many people at once. I use it that way, too. But sometimes, I know, we all Mark All Read… and really, that’s okay. If someone wants you to know a piece of news, it’s up to them to get you to see it. And if I want you to know something… the responsibility is mine, not yours.

I don’t hang around with Mark All Read that much. But he’s steady, and he helps me stay on top of my time and helps relieve my guilt. And that, I’d say, is a good friend.
