2:03 am skodobah: GOOOOOD evening! #kidlitchat
2:03 am SolomonInkwell: @skodobah – There you are! #kidlitchat
2:03 am KatGirl_Studio: @LaFabuliste yes getting paid is always a hope #kidlitchat
2:03 am gregpincus: I know that what I fear most is publishing and authors being paralyzed by fear rather than moving forward #kidlitchat
2:03 am skodobah: @SolomonInkwell How-deee #kidlitchat
2:03 am amyknichols: Hello. :) A couple of minutes late. #kidlitchat
2:03 am MissusM: Fear: Sarah Palin will come out with a second book. #kidlitchat
2:04 am 2KoP: Late in. My biggest hope is that kidlit gets better w/more outlets. Biggest fear? Budget cuts > recycled work. #kidlitchat
2:04 am dawnmetcalf: That e-books will take over. Dream: Everyone will read more books! Nightmare: Authors will be paid <$.01 per download. #kidlitchat
2:04 am SarahAiglen: H’lo, all. My biggest hope is to see more awesome books. No fears. Just curious to see if there is an evolution. #kidlitchat
2:04 am amithaknight: i haven’t been to #kidlitchat in a long time! (and probably can’t stay long.)
2:04 am skodobah: @sharifwrites Hey there! #kidlitchat
2:04 am comagrrl: Biggest fear: That people will quit buying books. #kidlitchat
2:04 am 2KoP: RT @gregpincus: I know that what I fear most is publishing and authors being paralyzed by fear rather than moving forward #kidlitchat
2:04 am dlschubert: Yo, peeps! What’s shaking? #noihaventbeendrinking #kidlitchat
2:04 am skodobah: @SolomonInkwell I was two minutes late. Shame. #kidlitchat
2:04 am TracyClark_TLC: Well, I certainly hope that YA in particular continues to be so popular and such an influence on pop-culture. #kidlitchat
2:04 am skodobah: RT @comagrrl: Biggest fear: That people will quit buying books. #kidlitchat
2:04 am katrinagermein: Hope – That when e-books can entertain children adults still spend sharing stories with kids. #kidlitchat
2:04 am DeeScribe: @dawnmetcalf My nightmare too. #kidlitchat
2:04 am JennBailey: Ya’ll are freaking me out. I NEVER thought school libraries wouldn’t stay. Now, with our district facing budget cuts. ACK!! #kidlitchat
2:04 am gregpincus: @RebeccAgent This is the one time I’m grateful for the stupid time delay on the Olympics. I can follow chat with two eyes! #kidlitchat
2:04 am weplayedpirates: Waitwait–what’re we discussing? (I’m four minutes late. Sue me.) #kidlitchat
2:04 am chantalkirkland: @TracyClark_TLC Agreed #kidlitchat
2:04 am comagrrl: @MissusM Hahahahahaha! Love it. #kidlitchat
2:04 am skodobah: I’m not too happy about the digital world overtaking paper and ink. #kidlitchat
2:04 am RebeccAgent: I fear that we are going to miss out on some great books/writers because they aren’t given time to grow and hope this isn’t so #kidlitchat
2:04 am Buffyandrews: 1 of my biggest hopes is that the “experience” of reading a book lives on. #kidlitchat
2:04 am bonnieadamson: Biggest fear is for future of libraries, indie bookstores. #kidlitchat
2:05 am sharifwrites: @skodobah hello! #kidlitchat
2:05 am 2KoP: Electronic publishing is less friendly to picture books. Kids are so tactile. #kidlitchat
2:05 am veschwab: Evening everyone! #kidlitchat
2:05 am dawnmetcalf: RT @gregpincus I know that what I fear most is publishing and authors being paralyzed by fear rather than moving forward #kidlitchat [Yeah.]
2:05 am emilytastic: @scott_tracey Me too. As a bookseller, I was always sad when a title got pulled for return. I always thought of the author. #kidlitchat
2:05 am skodobah: @sharifwrites Hope your week is going well. #kidlitchat
2:05 am DeeScribe: @JennBailey In Aust, some teacher/librarians already being phased out. scary:-( #kidlitchat
2:05 am jessicaleeander: @JennBailey The budget cuts have me worried too #kidlitchat
2:05 am Buffyandrews: @katrinagermein So agree. love sharing books with my kids when they were young. It was a magical time. #kidlitchat
2:05 am skodobah: @bonnieadamson Yes, especially those havens. My library is… my life. #kidlitchat
2:05 am sharifwrites: @skodobah That’s one of my fears, but deep down I feel that an interest in reading will never disappear. #kidlitchat
2:05 am RebeccAgent: I fear there are readers we aren’t addressing or aren’t finding books for them as big books/topics/genres get bigger #kidlitchat
2:06 am EgmontUSA: I fear the funding cuts for schools and libraries – so important that reading is promoted early on. #kidlitchat
2:06 am TracyClark_TLC: I fear that publishers are only chasing the “high-concept” kite and forgetting the quieter flowers under foot. #kidlitchat
2:06 am SarahAiglen: RT @Buffyandrews: 1 of my biggest hopes is that the “experience” of reading a book lives on. #kidlitchat
2:06 am comagrrl: Working in a library, I can understand the fear of losing them. Cuts, cuts, cuts and it is sad. #kidlitchat
2:06 am DeeScribe: @bonnieadamson I fear for Indie bookstores too. #kidlitchat
2:06 am amithaknight: RT @DeeScribe: @JennBailey In Aust, some teacher/librarians already being phased out. scary:-( #kidlitchat
2:06 am dawnmetcalf: @bonnieadamson YES! We *can’t* do this without librarians & indies! #kidlitchat
2:06 am jeanie_w: RT @RebeccAgent: I fear that we are going to miss out on some great books/writers because they aren’t given time to grow #kidlitchat
2:06 am veschwab: AGREED. RT @skodobah I’m not too happy about the digital world overtaking paper and ink. #kidlitchat
2:06 am sandyalonzo: Biggest fear: books as we know them today, will be completely replaced by Kindle-type, electronic books. #kidlitchat
2:06 am LaFabuliste: eBooks make me nervous. I’ve been researching with Pub Dom titles, and it’s just not the same at aaaaallllll #kidlitchat
2:06 am emilytastic: One of my biggest hopes is to hear from a reader who says my book helped them thru something tough. It’s part of why I write. #kidlitchat
2:06 am skodobah: @sharifwrites You’re right – there will always be a need for stories. #kidlitchat
2:06 am Arithmaroo: RT @gregpincus: TOPIC: What are your biggest hopes and biggest fears for the future of publishing and children’s books? #kidlitchat
2:06 am jessicaleeander: @EgmontUSA I couldn’t agree more #kidlitchat
2:06 am SolomonInkwell: I hope that the future allows children to remain children. Today, once you reach 11 y/o, you’re more mature than some adults. #kidlitchat
2:06 am DelilahSDawson: I’m terrified that my kids won’t love books as much as I do, but thus far, at 1 and 3, I think it’s safe to say we’re golden. #kidlitchat
2:07 am mgbuehrlen: Made it. Phew. #kidlitchat
2:07 am Buffyandrews: There is something about holding a book, turning the pages, smelling the ink, that you just don’t get from e-books, no? #kidlitchat
2:07 am tristanbancks: My greatest hope is that we,as writers, embrace new forms rather than run scared. And that this creates infinite opportunities #kidlitchat
2:07 am JEMACLEOD: RT @RebeccAgent: I fear that we are going to miss out on some great books/writers because they aren’t given time to grow and hope this isn’t so #kidlitchat
2:07 am DeeScribe: I fear that quality of what’s being produced may suffer. #kidlitchat
2:07 am dlschubert: I hope the MG and YA genres will burst wide open with many talented new writers and POV’s. #kidlitchat
2:07 am JennBailey: I hope, with the trend towards (grow) Buy local, that Indies will actually make a comeback. #kidlitchat
2:07 am skodobah: If my librarians knew how much I needed them, they’d be afraid of me! #kidlitchat
2:07 am bonnieadamson: Just lost our town’s venerable indie. So sad. #kidlitchat
2:07 am dawnmetcalf: @RebeccAgent Is that about the topics getting bigger? I thought the popular trends were making the pool smaller… Huh. #kidlitchat
2:07 am amyknichols: So glad to hear I’m not alone in my wariness of ebooks. #kidlitchat
2:07 am 2KoP: Short shelf life ? beautiful picture books going out of print too quickly. #kidlitchat
2:07 am sharifwrites: My hope is that the interest in YA will not wane, but will grow. #kidlitchat
2:07 am veschwab: I fear good books going unnoticed because they aren’t “loud” enough #kidlitchat
2:07 am DHeiligman: RT @gregpincus: TOPIC: What are your biggest hopes and biggest fears for the future of publishing and children’s books? #kidlitchat
2:07 am Georgia_McBride: @gregpincus @patricemichelle So many chats, so little time. #kidlitart Thurs 9PM EST #kidlitchat Tues 9PM EST #YAlitchat 9PM EST
2:07 am dawnmetcalf: @tristanbancks Ooh! I like the way you think! #kidlitchat
2:07 am skodobah: @Buffyandrews They could make “smell-o-vision” for Kindle. Just kidding. Gosh, I hope not. #kidlitchat
2:07 am 2KoP: RT @skodobah: If my librarians knew how much I needed them, theyd be afraid of me! #kidlitchat
2:07 am amyknichols: @DelilahSDawson My daughter, 6, just caught the reading bug. It is so exciting! #kidlitchat
2:07 am SarahAiglen: Still, there has always been evolution. Before books, there were scrolls. Before that, an oral tradition. #kidlitchat
2:07 am DeeScribe: @DelilahSDawson I asked my 13yo what he’d improve about his school and he said, more books in the libary – bookloving in genes #kidlitchat
2:08 am RebeccAgent: @dawnmetcalf by bigger I mean more dominant #kidlitchat
2:08 am DHeiligman: RT @RebeccAgent: hi all. Here and with eyes on olympics #kidlitchat me too.
2:08 am DelilahSDawson: @RebeccAgent: I fear that we are going to miss out on some great books/writers because they arent given time to grow #kidlitchat
2:08 am TracyClark_TLC: @SolomonInkwell That’s true, but then there are such harsh realities in some of their worlds and relating in a book may help. #kidlitchat
2:08 am emilytastic: I hope my book comes out before ebooks become more popular than paper books. (I’m pretty sure it will. Confidence!) #kidlitchat
2:08 am SheSureIs: My biggest fear is that there will be no place for the ‘page turn’. #kidlitchat
2:08 am jessicaleeander: my hope too RT @JennBailey: I hope, with the trend towards (grow) Buy local, that Indies will actually make a comeback. #kidlitchat
2:08 am ElanaJ: RT @veschwab: I fear good books going unnoticed because they arent “loud” enough [I second this] #kidlitchat
2:08 am kayeleenhamblin: My biggest fear is that what I have to offer won’t resonate with people. #kidlitchat
2:08 am skodobah: @Georgia_McBride Hi Georgia! #kidlitchat
2:08 am nkrell: @DelilahSDawson That is scary to think your kids won’t like reading. I have produced the 3rd generation. of word nerds. Go me! #kidlitchat
2:08 am cjomololu: I fear that “gatekeeping” parents will keep valuable YA from the hands of teens because of THEIR fears. #Kidlitchat
2:08 am amyknichols: @SarahAiglen Excellent point. #kidlitchat
2:08 am SarahAiglen: But I agree about the magic of books – I love the smell of paper and ink! #kidlitchat
2:08 am bonnieadamson: @DeeScribe Aww–you know how to raise ‘em! :-) #kidlitchat
2:08 am dawnmetcalf: Amen, sister! RT @dlschubert I hope the MG and YA genres will burst wide open with many talented new writers and POV’s. #kidlitchat
2:08 am SolomonInkwell: I hope that more adults will continue to revert back to childhood with YA books! :-) #kidlitchat
2:08 am LaFabuliste: @kayeleenhamblin Pish posh. Write truth and you will resonate like a bell. #kidlitchat

2:09 am gregpincus: Personally, I think there’s never been a better time to be a storyteller and reach an audience. So there’s hope. #kidlitchat
2:09 am TracyClark_TLC: Right on!!RT @cjomololu: I fear that “gatekeeping” parents will keep valuable YA from the hands of teens because of THEIR fears. #kidlitchat

2:09 am comagrrl: This worries me too. RT @veschwab I fear good books going unnoticed because they aren’t “loud” enough #kidlitchat
2:09 am skodobah: @cjomololu I think there will always be parents like that. Teens will prevail. #kidlitchat
2:09 am jessicaleeander: My hope is that the gatekeepers keep fighting to get kids reading despite limited resources and parental fears. #kidlitchat
2:09 am SolomonInkwell: RT @SarahAiglen: But I agree about the magic of books – I love the smell of paper and ink! #kidlitchat
2:09 am RebeccAgent: I fear we are going to miss out on great books because they are “sanitized” (YA) or committees think they’ll scare children #kidlitchat
2:09 am Georgia_McBride: @skodobah Oops. I’m not really here. Sorry. Just tweeting correct chat time for someone. Hello everyone. Goodbye. Happy chat. #kidlitchat
2:09 am 2KoP: @sharifwrites Seems like YA is the safest of the kidlit. No illustrations-cheaper to produce & it has an ever-new audience. #kidlitchat
2:09 am dawnmetcalf: I hope that the fear of “offending” doesn’t stop writers from writing or publishers from publishing brave new books. #kidlitchat
2:09 am davidhburton: @LaFabuliste I don’t fear ebooks (mine is being released tomorrow!), but I think the draw for kids is tough vs video games. #kidlitchat
2:09 am skodobah: Writing YA fiction is better than a wrinkle cream for keeping me young! #kidlitchat
2:09 am amithaknight: ebooks aren’t all bad. kindle makes it easier for me to read while caring for baby-just wish there were more @ my library’s site #kidlitchat
2:09 am amyknichols: RT @gregpincus Personally, I think there’s never been a better time to be a storyteller and reach an audience. So there’s hope. #kidlitchat

2:10 am kayeleenhamblin: @weplayedpirates every time I read that book, I feel the same way. #kidlitchat
2:10 am TheAsianAngel: One big hope: That classics don’t get lost in the trends. School visit today=blank stares at mention of Mouse & The Motorcycle. #kidlitchat
2:10 am Buffyandrews: Good thing is that we are able to reach readers via multiple platforms in whatever way works for them. Awesomeness:) #kidlitchat
2:10 am skodobah: @Georgia_McBride Aw crum!! Bye! #kidlitchat
2:10 am JennBailey: Our local Indie – Reading Reptile – has been hosting many 1st time book launches. @lauramanivong Escaping the Tiger3/6 Need them #kidlitchat
2:10 am KateMessner: I hope in this era of “the next big thing” there will still be room for many kinds of books for many kinds of kids. #kidlitchat
2:10 am jennwwrites: I’m coming in late. What’s the topic? #kidlitchat
2:10 am SolomonInkwell: Kids will ALWAYS find a way to read what they want to read. I know I did. ;-) #kidlitchat
2:10 am jeanie_w: I fear ALL authors and illustrators will need to spend most of their time at day jobs leaving little time to develop craft. #kidlitchat
2:10 am bonnieadamson: @jennwwrites TOPIC: What are your biggest hopes and biggest fears for the future of publishing and children’s books? #kidlitchat #kidlitchat
2:10 am dlschubert: Fear: overprotective parents. RT @cjomololu I fear “gatekeeping” parents will kp YA from hands of teens bc of THEIR fears. #Kidlitchat
2:10 am TheAsianAngel: Are kids getting enough chances to enjoy these great books? Or only given the latest and greatest? #kidlitchat
2:10 am DeeScribe: @gregpincus I agree think there’s never been a better time for writer/storytellers – we have to make it work. #kidlitchat
2:10 am TracyClark_TLC: I’m counting on that! RT @skodobah: Writing YA fiction is better than a wrinkle cream for keeping me young! #kidlitchat
2:10 am LaFabuliste: re: video games– I really like the 39 Clues angle. Give ‘em a book and then a way to tangibly interact with it. #kidlitchat
2:10 am skodobah: Those computer e-books, like Leapfrog, can’t compare to the real books kids haul around. #kidlitchat
2:10 am comagrrl: Biggest hope: The world will wake up and see the importance of books, reading, libraries, and lifelong learning. #kidlitchat
2:10 am jennymckmoss: RT @KateMessner: I hope n this era of “the next big thing” there’ll still be room for many kinds of books for many kinds of kids #kidlitchat
2:11 am bonnieadamson: @SolomonInkwell If publishers are publishing them . . . #kidlitchat
2:11 am skodobah: @SolomonInkwell Amen. #kidlitchat
2:11 am amy_m_young: But I agree about the magic of books – I love the smell of paper and ink! #kidlitchat (via @SarahAiglen)
2:11 am SarahAiglen: @gregpincus Why is this a great time to be a storyteller and reach an audience? #kidlitchat
2:11 am emilytastic: @cjomololu I fear that, 2. I don’t think I’d mind my bk being challenged, but I fear that teens who need 2 won’t get 2 read it. #kidlitchat
2:11 am JennBailey: Hope publishers don’t abandon the “middle listers.” #kidlitchat
2:11 am EgmontUSA: I hope that the appeal of Twilight, Harry Potter, etc. will lead to more open-mindedness for all the great things in kids books. #kidlitchat
2:11 am heatherwpetty: My biggest hope is that kidlit gets the respect it deserves in the industry. #kidlitchat
2:11 am chantalkirkland: I’m horrified that by the time I get my work published, my kid won’t be interested #kidlitchat
2:11 am DelilahSDawson: Gatekeepers, shmatecreepers. I wasn’t “allowed” to read Stephen King and Jean Auel, but I found a way. And loved ‘em. #kidlitchat
2:11 am 2KoP: I’m actually a little worried that the “kid” is being lost in kidlit in the quest for edgy. #kidlitchat
2:11 am dawnmetcalf: @RebeccAgent Ah. Gotcha. #kidlitchat
2:11 am cjomololu: I fear that people will turn to things like Common Sense Media will replace knowledgeable “real” booksellers and their advice. #kidlitchat
2:11 am SolomonInkwell: @dlschubert – But don’t you think that parents today, on the whole, are more open than they were in the past? #kidlitchat
2:11 am KateMessner: I’d be sad if there were no longer room for quieter/quirkier books that are so important to some readers. #kidlitchat
2:11 am skodobah: @jeanie_w Oh yes! That’s why I write at night. Ugh! #kidlitchat
2:11 am AbbiGlines: RT @SarahAiglen: Still, there has always been evolution. Before books, there were scrolls. Before that, an oral tradition. #kidlitchat YEP

2:11 am weplayedpirates: Biggest hope: That people continue to keep reading, and the books we love now will become ‘classics’ and endure forever. #kidlitchat
2:11 am davidhburton: I want to see more boy books (particularly with pictures). I have 3 boys and they’ll read it if it’s visual. #kidlitchat
2:12 am gregpincus: @SarahAiglen The internet and ability to connect with people means storytelling possibilities are endless #kidlitchat
2:12 am heatherwpetty: I mean, I don’t write for awards or anything, but I feel like sometimes kidlit is viewed as less than, even when it is brilliant #kidlitchat
2:12 am dlschubert: Glad my folks nvr censored my rdg. RT @SolomonInkwell Kids will ALWAYS find way to read what they want 2 read. I know I did. ;-) #kidlitchat
2:12 am PaulWHankins: We have to have more teachers reading and reading and reading more YA to be more comfortable in book talking your titles. #kidlitchat
2:12 am cjomololu: @emilytastic Exactly! Can’t imagine what some parents would make of mine. #kidlitchat
2:12 am TracyClark_TLC: @heatherwpetty You’re right! The mainstream thinks it must be “easier” to write for kids. *snickers* #kidlitchat
2:12 am KatGirl_Studio: RT I fear ALL authors & illustrators will need to spend most of their time at day jobs leaving little time to develop craft. #kidlitchat
2:12 am DeeScribe: @skodobah “Those computer e-books, like Leapfrog, can’t compare to the real books kids haul around” – true – even kids agree #kidlitchat

2:12 am 2KoP: RT @KateMessner: Id be sad if there were no longer room for quieter/quirkier books that are so important to some readers. #kidlitchat
2:12 am jeanie_w: I hope demand for kids’ books grows (and not just among the SCBWI membership). #kidlitchat
2:12 am literaticat: I AM HERE! What did I miss? #kidlitchat
2:12 am amithaknight: hope publishers will be more open to printing books featuring “ethnic” characters on the cover #kidlitchat
2:12 am DHeiligman: I am excited and worried about new media, electronic devices etc. #kidlitchat
2:12 am JennBailey: @SolomonInkwell My parents let me read whatever I wanted. Figured I would only understand what I would understand. I heart them #kidlitchat
2:12 am katrinagermein: Agree RT @2KoP I’m actually a little worried that the “kid” is being lost in kidlit in the quest for edgy. #kidlitchat
2:12 am amithaknight: RT @jeanie_w: I hope demand for kids books grows (and not just among the SCBWI membership). #kidlitchat

2:12 am SarahAiglen: @weplayedpirates, re Fahrenheit 451, have to remember that great books *have* been lost down through history. :( #kidlitchat
2:13 am mgbuehrlen: RT @EgmontUSA: I hope the appeal of Twilight, Harry Potter, will lead to more open-mindedness 4 the great things in kids books. #kidlitchat
2:13 am skodobah: @DeeScribe That’s right! My son ignores the Leapfrog he received for Christmas. Hauls Swimmy and Richard Scarry to bed. #kidlitchat
2:13 am jessicaleeander: me 2 RT @KateMessner:Id be sad if there were no longer room for quieter/quirkier books that are so important to some readers #kidlitchat
2:13 am cjomololu: @SolomonInkwell No. #kidlitchat
2:13 am emilytastic: @cjomololu Yes. And yours is an important story! Both of my finished drafts would be loathed by “Common Sense,” too. Terrifying. #kidlitchat
2:13 am TheAsianAngel: I’ve heard their name used w/ a frown quite often RT @cjomololu: I fear that people will turn to things like Common Sense Media #kidlitchat
2:13 am dawnmetcalf: @davidhburton I think HUGO CABRET is a herald of tying the visual with the text. Amazing book! #kidlitchat
2:13 am SolomonInkwell: The parents of today were the cool kids of the 70′s & 80′s. After everbody Wang-Chunged, how could they sensor their kids? :-) #kidlitchat
2:13 am bonnieadamson: @DHeiligman It is exciting and scary at the same time, yes. #kidlitchat
2:13 am PaulWHankins: Our Silver Creek students know titles. And they are reading more now than ever before. You guys are doing a great job engaging. #kidlitchat
2:13 am gregpincus: @DeeScribe Agreed. We need to figure out ways to get paid. The audience for stories remains! #kidlitchat

2:13 am Buffyandrews: Hope that writers and editors and agents and Pub houses work together to figure this brave new world out. #kidlitchat

2:13 am cjomololu: RT @amithaknight: hope publishers will be more open to printing books featuring “ethnic” characters on the cover #kidlitchat
2:13 am skodobah: @dlschubert The greatest fears tend to attract the fears themselves. #kidlitchat

2:14 am jennymckmoss: RT @2KoP a little worried that the “kid” is being lost in kidlit in the quest for edgy <-Interesting. Must think abt this #kidlitchat
2:14 am authorViviAnna: RT @Buffyandrews: Hope that writers and editors and agents and Pub houses work together to figure this brave new world out. #kidlitchat
2:14 am 2KoP: I’m over corporate entities like Accelerated Reader usurping the role of great librarians and dictating reading “levels”. #kidlitchat
2:14 am JennBailey: @SolomonInkwell Or She-Bopped! When that played on our local AM station my sister and I couldn’t contain the laughter! #kidlitchat
2:14 am YolaRamunno: I fear that I will finally get a book contract and then the industry will collapse. #kidlitchat
2:14 am literaticat: Wow this is already giving me brainfever. #kidlitchat
2:14 am MaryCalhounBrow: Thank God for the small press! They’re giving us newbies a chance. I think my publisher is happy she did #kidlitchat

2:14 am SarahAiglen: @gregpincus, definitely! #kidlitchat
2:14 am dawnmetcalf: @katrinagermein @2KoP Kinda like what @veschwab was saying: worried about losing books that aren’t “gritty/edgy” enough. #kidlitchat
2:14 am DeeScribe: @skodobah That’s true – facing change head on is the way to go:-) #kidlitchat

2:14 am dlschubert: Sometimes the “wilder” kids become the more overprotective parents. @SolomonInkwell How could they sensor their kids? :-) #kidlitchat
2:15 am nkrell: @SolomonInkwell Why thank you. I resemble that remark. Except I didn’t Wang Chung. I Duran Duran’d it. #kidlitchat
2:15 am KatGirl_Studio: I hope that we will be able to eliminate “Spec Work” and “WFH” once and for all! #kidlitchat
2:15 am veschwab: Hope that one day tell someone I say I write YA, their first answer isn’t “Oh, like Twilight, right?” #kidlitchat

2:15 am LaFabuliste: I wonder if writing/story will evolve a separate branch to accommodate ebook format. #kidlitchat
2:15 am emilytastic: @2KoP Quest for edgy? Explain. I think there are plenty of books that express different, more quiet ideas as well. #kidlitchat
2:15 am skodobah: @DeeScribe What you resist comes back in your face! #kidlitchat

2:18 am veschwab: @emilytastic Exactly, I’m thankful, but how about “Oh, like When You Reach Me?” or “Oh, like The Graveyard Book?” #kidlitchat
2:18 am emilytastic: @dawnmetcalf @cjomololu I think we should make T-shirts with foil-style lettering to go w/ our “bad author” stickers. #kidlitchat #dreams
2:18 am JessicaLeader: So agree w/@KateMessner–and hope that they can hire back publicists, too. I feel like 1/2 my job is to be self-publicist! #kidlitchat
2:18 am comagrrl: @YolaRamunno I worry about the future of libraries too. #kidlitchat
2:18 am 2KoP: @emilytastic Yes, as well as that even picture books seem to be getting darker by the moment. #kidlitchat

2:18 am DeeScribe: My 11yo and I still read together – not the same with e-book – but I think room for both. #kidlitchat

2:18 am cjomololu: If anyone says anything about figure skating in this chat, I will reach in from CA and throttle you. Just sayin. #Kidlitchat
2:18 am dlschubert: @SolomonInkwell @skodobah Good question! Where is @bakersmark ? #kidlitchat (I just emailed her. We’ll see what happens.)
2:19 am nkrell: @YolaRamunno Libraries won’t become extinct. The radio didn’t die, just because of the invention of the TV. #kidlitchat
2:19 am PaulWHankins: @bonnieadamson I know this to be true as I download Let the Great World Spin yet buy the book simply because I had to hold it. #kidlitchat

2:20 am bonnieadamson: @PaulWHankins Remember how exciting it was to write your name in a book? “This is mine!” #kidlitchat

2:22 am 2KoP: @gregpincus Format does matter w/very young readers. Reading a PB is a physical experience, not a virtual one. #kidlitchat

2:22 am KateMessner: I hope that creativity and optimism trump fear & cynicism as we face changes in publishing. #kidlitchat
2:22 am dawnmetcalf: @adamselzer I’m waiting for the interactivity to kick in. Like A YOUNG LADY’S ILLUSTRATED PRIMER. #kidlitchat
2:22 am emilytastic: I hope to be able to write in a ton of genres during my career. I want to do a verse novel, mystery, paranormal, contemporary… #kidlitchat
2:22 am DHeiligman: @JennBailey Well I do like that idea. I think it’s sad that quiet and quirky is hard to sell. #kidlitchat
2:22 am tristanbancks: In ‘Content’ @Doctorow compares VHS and e-books. Home vid created more opp’s to see movies rather than killing cinema. I like it #kidlitchat
2:23 am davidhburton: @dawnmetcalf Well, with that kind of recommendation how can I not pick it up?! Thanks! #kidlitchat
2:23 am SarahAiglen: @skodobah, lol (I think I’m a co-author. ;-) #kidlitchat
2:23 am amyknichols: @kayeleenhamblin Interestingly enough, downloaded iPhone PB app, and my kids love it. :) #kidlitchat

2:23 am bonnieadamson: @DHeiligman We were multitasking. :-) #kidlitchat
2:23 am katrinagermein: @misscackle Just type #kidlitchat into the search on your sidebar and then you can follow the whole conversation. About 40 minutes left.
2:23 am gregpincus: @2KoP Well, no one’s gonna let a kid chew on an iPad or other tablet. But the experience will still be tactile beyond that #kidlitchat
2:23 am LaFabuliste: No! The PB will never die! Parents/aunts/uncles remember that experience and want to give that. #kidlitchat
2:23 am JennBailey: Do you think Homer (think Iliad, not Simpsons) ever worried about his art? Stories still being told just not how he did. #kidlitchat
2:23 am DHeiligman: @KatGirl_Studio Yeah, me, too. Except now I turn of for 24 hours once a week. #kidlitchat
2:23 am skodobah: @DeeScribe Euww, that’s terrible. I wrote a blog post about Kindle and electronic books… what the future looks like. #kidlitchat
2:23 am leewind: I actually think format changes can shift the way we tell stories – but a good story will always prevail #kidlitchat
2:23 am ElanaJ: There’s something aesthetically pleasing about holding a book and reading it. It’s human nature. It won’t disappear. #kidlitchat

2:23 am patricemichelle: Ironically, I read the eBooks and my kids prefer the print versions. Maybe they’ll migrate to eBooks one day. #kidlitchat
2:23 am SolomonInkwell: Publishers stay savvy, though. Books today are fun all the way around. The shape, color, size. They’re just COOL to have. #kidlitchat
2:23 am DeeScribe: My computer loving kids also love books – nobody asking what they want. Just assuming they prefer computers. #kidlitchat
2:23 am sharifwrites: @DHeiligman I think it will eventually settle with compatibility between services, pricing, and any other issue #kidlitchat
2:23 am Martychan13: Wondering what the ebook landscape would look like if publishing industry started developing this format 30 years ago. #kidlitchat
2:23 am TracyClark_TLC: @gregpincus I don’t know. Pat the Bunny just wouldn’t be the same. #kidlitchat
2:23 am DHeiligman: @BonnieAdamson LOL! #kidlitchat. If you don’t switch to Idol you can mute now.
2:23 am dawnmetcalf: @gregpincus Since HUGO is about the magic of film, I couldn’t agree more! #kidlitchat
2:24 am RebeccAgent: for illustrated books, there must always be a physical book. I fear children would miss out on the true art of illus. otherwise #kidlitchat
2:24 am 2KoP: @emilytastic True. Not necessarily voting for pink & fluffy either. Just good stories. #kidlitchat
2:24 am MaryCalhounBrow: Amen to that @jenny Oh, yes. .., and may promotion magically do itself! ;-) #kidlitchat

2:24 am dawnmetcalf: @TracyClark_TLC @gregpincus I dunno. Pat The Screen? <:-S #kidlitchat
2:24 am amyknichols: @Buffyandrews Can I be selfish with you and say ditto? #kidlitchat
2:24 am charmaineclancy: My biggest hope for publishing would be to get even just one kid that struggles with literacy switched onto reading #kidlitchat
2:24 am kayeleenhamblin: @ElanaJ I love the curling up in bed with a book in my hands. The feel of the paper. #kidlitchat
2:24 am davidhburton: @skodobah And durable. It needs to function after it’s been dropped like 50 times. #kidlitchat
2:24 am emilytastic: @2KoP There will always be good stories. I’m sure of it. #kidlitchat
2:24 am tristanbancks: @adamselzer I like yr tweet on the evolution not just being e versions of books but an entirely new form. This is our job, si? #kidlitchat
2:24 am RebeccAgent: for longer fiction& non, I fear ebks will mean bells & whistles and interactive elements that will take us away from the words #kidlitchat
2:24 am nkrell: @RebeccAgent Exactly. #kidlitchat
2:24 am amithaknight: but will PBs be thought of as a “toy”? esp board books/fuzzy books, etc.? #kidlitchat
2:25 am davidhburton: RT @charmaineclancy: My biggest hope for publishing would be to get even just one kid that struggles with literacy switched onto reading #kidlitchat
2:25 am chantalkirkland: @dawnmetcalf LOL! #kidlitchat
2:25 am SolomonInkwell: I love illustrations in books, even if simple pencil. I think it adds to the character of the book as an item. #kidlitchat
2:25 am davidhburton: @charmaineclancy Nice! #kidlitchat
2:25 am cjomololu: @SolomonInkwell How do you autograph and ebook? #kidlitchat
2:25 am PaulWHankins: @dawnmetcalf @gregpincus. TBS used to run promos of the rocket hitting man in the moon in eye. Hugo brought that back to me. #kidlitchat
2:25 am dawnmetcalf: @skodobah @SolomonInkwell Admittedly, it’s hard to get a papercut on a Kindle. ;-) #kidlitchat
2:25 am gregpincus: @adamselzer I agree completely. We’ll stop paying lotsa money to download big PDFs. Ebooks will be “more” and “different” #kidlitchat
2:25 am KatGirl_Studio: @RebeccAgent yes unless it’s digitally painted, then you would get the back-lit luminosity you don’t get in print #kidlitchat
2:25 am bonnieadamson: @amyknichols Apps are great. :-D #kidlitchat
2:25 am emilytastic: @charmaineclancy Yes, I want this, too! I want kids/YAs to love reading, and it would be great if my book gave that to them. #kidlitchat
2:25 am dorothiar: RT @skodobah: @SolomonInkwell It feels good to have pages to hold. And anticipate turning to the next page! Nothing like it. #kidlitchat
2:25 am skodobah: @davidhburton And it must be able to handle tape and staples, as well as self-added crayon drawings! #kidlitchat
2:25 am ElanaJ: @gregpincus I teach elem. school, and they love reading. Maybe because I’m stroking the cover, but… #kidlitchat
2:25 am amyknichols: @bonnieadamson They are! :) #kidlitchat
2:25 am planetalvina: RT @RebeccAgent: I hope publishers will soon be able to hire more so editors aren’t overworked #kidlitchat
2:25 am KatGirl_Studio: @cjomololu ya exactly, you can’t #kidlitchat
2:25 am leewind: I heard recently that kids today are natives to the technology, and we’re immigrants. #kidlitchat
2:25 am SolomonInkwell: @skodobah – I agree. I love holding a book, too. Are we just fuddy duddys? :-) #kidlitchat
2:25 am SarahAiglen: @skodobah, they would be too horrible. *shudder* Wait, is Edward Gorey still available? #kidlitchat
2:26 am DelilahSDawson: @gregpincus My daughter loves her books so much that she sleeps with ‘em. And sits beside me while I’m reading to look at PBs. #kidlitchat
2:26 am sharifwrites: @charmaineclancy Same, would love for them to be life-long readers. #kidlitchat
2:26 am gregpincus: @TracyClark_TLC I figure tech advances will make it so that you touch the reading device and “feel” Pat the Bunny, etc #kidlitchat
2:26 am skodobah: @dawnmetcalf As a child, I got a paper cut in the eye from a picture book. It was a sign! #kidlitchat
2:26 am SarahAiglen: RT @SolomonInkwell: Publishers stay savvy, though. Books today are fun all the way around. The shape, color, size. They’re just COOL to have. #kidlitchat
2:26 am DeeScribe: I say whatever works to get kids reading, but cater for all:-) #kidlitchat
2:26 am DHeiligman: @sharifwrites agreed. Also new technology will have a big impact on format and therefore content. #kidlitchat
2:26 am MaryCalhounBrow: RT @cjomololu: @SolomonInkwell How do you autograph and ebook? #kidlitchat You can’t haha. love it.
2:26 am gregpincus: RT @KateMessner: I hope that creativity and optimism trump fear & cynicism as we face changes in publishing. #kidlitchat
2:26 am skodobah: @SolomonInkwell Fuddy duddy! Love that term. Yes, we are. So what? #kidlitchat
2:26 am nkrell: I think ebooks are a great idea for textbooks. Then my babies won’t have back problems when they get older. #kidlitchat
2:26 am ElanaJ: @leewind So true!! We use computers to help teach reading. They’re natives. #kidlitchat
2:26 am bonnieadamson: @DHeiligman My sweetie is taping Idol for me . . . :-) #kidlitchat
2:26 am cjomololu: RT @leewind: I heard recently that kids today are natives to the technology, and we’re immigrants. #kidlitchat
2:26 am patricemichelle: @cjomololu @SolomonInkwell How do you autograph and ebook? #kidlitchat Usually coverflats are autographed instead. :)
2:26 am 2KoP: @gregpincus Disagree. Screens are not the same as how kids experience books – they hang upside down, let toy friends turn pages #kidlitchat
2:26 am dawnmetcalf: @gregpincus There is magic in turning the page; the action of revealing, the power of making a story happen. Kids DO love that. #kidlitchat
2:26 am katrinagermein: Agree with @DeeScribe.Think we’re too quick to assume that kids will always prefer new technologies rather than appreciate both. #kidlitchat
2:26 am JeffreyBeesler: RT @charmaineclancy: My biggest hope for publishing would be to get even just one kid that struggles with literacy switched onto reading #kidlitchat
2:27 am TracyClark_TLC: I hope that “normal” (non writer) adults continue to read YA for their own pleasure. #kidlitchat
2:27 am Buffyandrews: ME TOO RT @SolomonInkwell: @skodobah – I agree. I love holding a book, too. Are we just fuddy duddys? :-) #kidlitchat
2:27 am skodobah: @SarahAiglen LOL! Maybe illustrations would work… I think so. I’m picturing them. #kidlitchat
2:27 am LaFabuliste: Re: PBs, especially with fuzzy/smelly/bumpy books for the youngest readers. Can an iPhone grow fur? I think not. #kidlitchat
2:27 am DHeiligman: @RebeccAgent Yes, but I am not 100% sure it will be a bad thing. I am trying to keep an open mind. #kidlitchat
2:27 am DeeScribe: @gregpincus But will you be able to ‘smell’ Pat the Bunny?:-) #kidlitchat
2:27 am peg366: A love of reading starts with concept books/picture books. Let’s hope they stay and provide parents with cuddle times. #kidlitchat
2:27 am KatGirl_Studio: @nkrell ya also how to books so you don’t have to hold them open #kidlitchat
2:27 am runtfarmbooks: RT @gregpincus: RT @KateMessner: I hope that creativity and optimism trump fear & cynicism as we face changes in publishing. #kidlitchat
2:27 am skodobah: Fuddy Duddys Unite! #kidlitchat
2:27 am dorothiar: My father just sent me an old children’s book he had when he was a child. It smelled so old and the stories still engaging. #kidlitchat
2:27 am gregpincus: @ElanaJ The readers I know love reading. They’d love it on a tablet or with a book. #kidlitchat
2:27 am davidhburton: @skodobah And chocolate!! #kidlitchat
2:27 am cjomololu: @nkrell Yes! E-textbooks = great! #kidlitchat
2:27 am dawnmetcalf: @MaryCalhounBrow @cjomololu @SolomonInkwell Upload a signature icon? ;-) #kidlitchat
2:27 am DHeiligman: oops @BonnieAdamson My sweetie is working next to me. But am going to ask him to dish out the granola. #kidlitchat
2:27 am SolomonInkwell: I love the thought of E-Books. I do. Right now, the cost keeps many a bay. #kidlitchat
2:27 am skodobah: @LaFabuliste There’s a bumpy app for that. #kidlitchat
2:28 am skodobah: @davidhburton Oh yes, must have that. #kidlitchat
2:28 am nkrell: @KatGirl_Studio Too true. #kidlitchat
2:28 am chantalkirkland: I think kids today will want to read real books–my 7 yr old LOVES the real thing–and he still loves books on the IPhone, too #kidlitchat
2:28 am gregpincus: Yes, @dawnmetcalf, there is magic in the discovery. Don’t you think technology will be able to mirror that? #kidlitchat
2:28 am DeeScribe: @peg366 My 11yo and 13yo still like cuddling with parents and reading together – not the same with a hand held, lol #kidlitchat
2:28 am patricemichelle: eBook Readers will go out and buy the print version of the books they really, really love. #kidlitchat
2:28 am leewind: one cool thing about e-books could be the link-ability of things. Like interactive footnotes… That’s exciting! #kidlitchat
2:28 am sandyalonzo: Teachers, too! RT @peg366: A love of reading starts with concept books/picture books. Lets hope they stay … #kidlitchat
2:28 am JennBailey: Anyone else remember that Star Trek episode where the “crazy” lawyer defending Kirk had actual books? Love that episode #geek #kidlitchat
2:28 am pippinmathur: We have it all, pbs, iPhone kindle is loaded, and dulemba’s pb. They are all great in their own wats. #kidlitchat
2:28 am ElanaJ: @gregpincus I agree. I’m not sure that’s a problem… ?? Reading is the goal, after all, right? #kidlitchat
2:28 am dlschubert: Genius! RT @dawnmetcalf Upload a signature icon? ;-) #kidlitchat
2:28 am davidhburton: @gregpincus and with green eggs and ham? :) #kidlitchat
2:28 am Martychan13: I did author visit with a video component. Kids automatically looked at screen. Are we imposing our love for books on kids? #kidlitchat
2:28 am dawnmetcalf: @LaFabuliste Wow. I *hope* not! WereKindle?! #kidlitchat
2:28 am skodobah: @dorothiar There’s something about musty, crusty books from our childhoods. #kidlitchat
2:28 am PaulWHankins: The good story + good read aloud are powerful, essential ingredients in the early love of reading. Harness this with our kids. #kidlitchat
2:28 am gregpincus: @DelilahSDawson clearly if we go all digital, yours will be a multi e-reader home! #kidlitchat
2:28 am tristanbancks: I have a hope that publishers will begin to partner more with other content providers to fund bigger multi-platform projects #kidlitchat
2:28 am MaryCalhounBrow: @JeffreyBeesler I work in the classrooms to try to get reluctant writers to say “I’m Lovin’ it” #kidlitchat
2:28 am HeidiRKling: @JessicaLeader My kids mauls my Blackberry everyday. :P #kidlitchat <<not that they’re reading books on it.
2:29 am YolaRamunno: Looking for a book is half the fun. I’m not sure if you can get that same excitement w/ the new technology. #kidlitchat
2:29 am 2KoP: Is it off topic to ask how we feel about really bad grammar in kidlit, excuse being that’s how kids talk. #kidlitchat
2:29 am chantalkirkland: @dawnmetcalf Ohh, what an idea for a new book! The werekindle strikes again! #kidlitchat
2:29 am skodobah: @patricemichelle It’s like that with music. If you LOVE it, you will get the CD and skip the MP3 download. #kidlitchat
2:29 am gregpincus: @davidhburton maybe it’ll be green eggs and RAM? #kidlitchat
2:29 am Buffyandrews: @dorothiar I have a whole library of kid’s books. Still have The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton. My fav as a child. #kidlitchat
2:29 am JennBailey: @dlschubert @dawnmetcalf It’s been done. @jasperfforde has done it for kindle downloads of Shades of Grey. It’s sweet! #kidlitchat
2:29 am dawnmetcalf: @gregpincus Honestly? No. There isn’t the same magic to scrolling or clicking or opening a window, IMO. Could be wrong. #kidlitchat
2:29 am dawnmetcalf: @skodobah ow!!! #kidlitchat
2:29 am SolomonInkwell: I am all for whatever gets a kid to read…be it a cool looking book, or a cool looking E-Reader. Just read and read…. #kidlitchat
2:29 am keelyinkster: @HeidiRKling my kid downloaded Alice in Wonderland to his itouch -he thought it was the coolest! #kidlitchat
2:30 am chantalkirkland: @2KoP Ugh, it makes me crazy that my kid picks-up bad language use from books! Too bad that I pick it up, too. LO!L #kidlitchat
2:30 am MaryCalhounBrow: @ElanaJ I use Youtube to encourage reading in the classrooms. This generation needs to “see.” #kidlitchat
2:30 am gregpincus: @2KoP And what will stop kids from reading that way… as technology advances? Not that I think books disappear, btw. #kidlitchat
2:30 am shikokusue: Teens can’t buy e-books themselves, right? Most don’t have credit cards.#kidlitchat
2:30 am cjomololu: RT @gregpincus: @davidhburton maybe it’ll be green eggs and RAM? #kidlitchat
2:30 am leewind: One problem with losing physical bookshelves is that it’s harder to stumble upon something interesting on the shelf nearby… #kidlitchat
2:30 am dawnmetcalf: @chantalkirkland I hope Nick Park does it. ;-) #kidlitchat
2:30 am skodobah: @dawnmetcalf I got conjunctivitis! #kidlitchat
2:30 am TracyClark_TLC: @JennBailey I remember the Twilight Zone where the only thing the man wanted in post-apoc world was a library. Broken glasses! #kidlitchat
2:30 am 2KoP: RT Agree w/@dawnmetcalf: @gregpincus Honestly? No. There isnt the same magic to scrolling or clicking or opening a window, IMO. #kidlitchat
2:30 am hipwritermama: I agree! RT @dawnmetcalf I hope fear of “offending” doesn’t stop writers from writing/publishers from publishing brave new books #kidlitchat
2:30 am skodobah: Stories that touch the heart… that can be touched with the hands… will always be treasured. #kidlitchat
2:30 am Buffyandrews: Seriously, books could become like those 4-D movies with smells and sounds emanating from the player. See cake/smell cake #kidlitchat
2:30 am mgbuehrlen: @Martychan13 I think that’s one of the reasons why the love of books has continued. We want to share what we love, yes? #kidlitchat
2:30 am ElanaJ: @dawnmetcalf But magic isn’t the point. Encouraging literacy is. I don’t think format matters. The magic comes from the words. #kidlitchat
2:30 am dawnbonnevie: #kidlitchat biggest fear= everything based on money, biggest hope=everything based on love. sappy&unrealistic but there u go.
2:30 am sandyalonzo: Is anyone worried about electronic book piracy? It’s happening. #kidlitchat
2:30 am TheAsianAngel: Yes! RT @SolomonInkwell: I am all for whatever gets a kid to read…be it a cool looking book, or a cool looking E-Reader. #kidlitchat
2:31 am dawnmetcalf: @emilytastic @cjomololu I’m *SO* with you, there! #kidlitchat
2:31 am davidhburton: @gregpincus LOL! Clever!! #kidlitchat
2:31 am nkrell: @gregpincus How long have you been waiting to say that? Green eggs and RAM. Classic! #kidlitchat
2:31 am katrinagermein: Need to have lunch while I can still see straight. See you next time. #kidlitchat
2:31 am MaryCalhounBrow: @shikokusue My teen can download all the books he wants. Seriously. #kidlitchat
2:31 am patricemichelle: As a mostly eBook reader, one of the things I miss is browsing a bookstore…love the smell of new books! #kidlitchat
2:31 am gregpincus: @dawnmetcalf @2KoP I think you will be proven wrong as tech get more tactile. But we’re not quite there yet. #kidlitchat
2:31 am EgmontUSA: @shikokusue But kids do well enough with iTunes. Surely ways will develop. #kidlitchat
2:31 am ElanaJ: @MaryCalhounBrow Sweet! Get on their level, encourage literacy. You go! #kidlitchat
2:31 am 2KoP: @gregpincus I’m not arguing that ebooks don’t have a great place. Just that PB are unique w/unique audience. #kidlitchat
2:31 am PaulWHankins: This would be a most powerful intervention: the great book trailers being produced shown on movie screens before the feature: #kidlitchat
2:31 am DeeScribe: Aust Gov’t establishing new Industry Book Strategy Group to address this issue – good thing:-) #kidlitchat
2:31 am pippinmathur: RT @SolomonInkwell: I am all for whatever gets a kid to read…be it a cool looking book, Just read and read…. #kidlitchat Witness :)
2:31 am amyknichols: Yep. RT@leewind One problem with losing physical bookshelves is it’s harder to stumble on something interesting on shelf nearby #kidlitchat
2:31 am emilytastic: @dawnmetcalf I hereby promise to be fearless. Those who might be offended by my books are not my concern! #badauthor #kidlitchat
2:31 am davidhburton: What’s interesting is that the Nintendo DS has the capability to be used as an ereader, but sadly, isn’t. #kidlitchat
2:32 am Buffyandrews: Sometimes I think we are losing kids to all of the bells and whistles of modern technology. Where’s the quiet anymore? #kidlitchat
2:32 am kayeleenhamblin: I think a lot of depends on age. If you can’t hook them on reading without tech, they might not sign up. #kidlitchat
2:32 am amithaknight: @sandyalonzo at least piracy means people want to read the books :) #kidlitchat
2:32 am PaulWHankins: RT @nkrell: @gregpincus How long have you been waiting to say that? Green eggs and RAM. Classic! #kidlitchat
2:32 am DeeScribe: Aust Book Strategy Group will comprise publishers, agents, authors, illustrators, booksellers etc. Address this issue. #kidlitchat
2:32 am TheAsianAngel: Not to go all Darwinian, but it IS necessary to evolve to adapt to change. If the kids go digital, we go digital. #kidlitchat
2:32 am literaticat: I still just don’t see the majority of young readers that I know gravitating toward ebooks. Old people, yes. Teens, no. #kidlitchat
2:32 am gregpincus: @leewind One plus with losing physical books is that I’ll stop stumbling over them in my office. Literally stumbling! #kidlitchat
2:32 am tristanbancks: @gregpincus How do you see the novel evolving going forward? Someone pointed out to me that novel doesn’t exist in many cultures #kidlitchat
2:32 am cjomololu: @PaulWHankins I wish. Still haven’t done mine yet. #kidlitchat
2:32 am jessicaleeander: There is nothing like going to a bookstore and a seller shares a gem that you might not have discovered otherwise #kidlitchat
2:32 am MaryCalhounBrow: I read faster on my kindle. I savor my hardcovers. #kidlitchat
2:32 am seancranbury: YES! RT @davidhburton: What’s interesting is that the Nintendo DS has the capability to be used as an ereader, but sadly, isn’t. #kidlitchat
2:32 am literaticat: Maybe that is because I know weird kids… but… #kidlitchat
2:32 am keelyinkster: @gregpincus Agree the ipad doesn’t have that ‘it’ factor it’s just kind of bulky looking no kid appeal #kidlitchat
2:32 am SolomonInkwell: @Buffyandrews – Playstation ate it after Nintendo cooked it… :-) #kidlitchat
2:32 am YolaRamunno: @Buffyandrews Agree. #kidlitchat
2:32 am HeidiRKling: @keelyinkster That is cool! #kidlitchat
2:33 am 2KoP: Too many distractions on ereaders. Kids would rather game. #kidlitchat
2:33 am gregpincus: @Buffyandrews of course they could evolve there. Dunno when, but I assume tech will add in every “sense” it can. #kidlitchat
2:33 am bonnieadamson: @amyknichols @leewind So true–”directed search” means less serendipity, I fear. #kidlitchat
2:33 am Martychan13: @leewind iTunes has Genuis to recommend similar songs to one you’re listening to. Why not have something like that for eBooks? #kidlitchat
2:33 am TracyClark_TLC: Is there an unprecedented number of teens reading and buying books? Or is there just more options for them now? #kidlitchat
2:33 am chantalkirkland: @literaticat Agreed-my older friends do e-books, but not their kiddos. #kidlitchat
2:33 am cjomololu: @Buffyandrews My 9 & 12 yo boys have been playing lego’s for the past 2 hours. Still happens. #kidlitchat
2:33 am tiffanyaneal: @elanaj I definitely agree – I don’t think books are going anywhere… #kidlitchat
2:33 am MaryCalhounBrow: @Martychan13 I always bring video into the classrooms. They eat it up. #kidlitchat
2:33 am kayeleenhamblin: @literaticat Especially when cost is so prohibitive for teens who want to buy other things. #kidlitchat
2:33 am dawnmetcalf: Oh! Oh! I forgot to say: I *DID* make that T-shirt, BTW: http://bit.ly/2Guij8 :-D !!! #kidlitchat
2:33 am emilytastic: @literaticat I don’t know any teens young 20-something w/ e-readers, either. #kidlitchat
2:33 am gregpincus: @2KoP I do agree that PBs are unique. I just think there’s going to be space for digital there. But none of this is exclusive. #kidlitchat
2:33 am skodobah: My son asked to watch snakes on the computer. I told him he should look at a snake book instead. #kidlitchat
2:33 am amithaknight: agree! RT @MaryCalhounBrow: I read faster on my kindle. I savor my hardcovers. #kidlitchat
2:34 am DeeScribe: @gregpincus Stumbling over books can be a problem – but what else would I fill my study with:-) #kidlitchat
2:34 am DHeiligman: @BonnieAdamson Excellent! But she didn’t call the cops right? #kidlitchat
2:34 am HeidiRKling: @literaticat I think teens would rather facebook etc. on their computers/phones than read books. #kidlitchat I don’t want to read on here.
2:34 am yachicka: RT @davidhburton: the Nintendo DS has the capability to be used as an ereader <– didn’t know this *scrambles for son’s DS* #kidlitchat
2:34 am leewind: I think many presenters forget when face-to-face that WE are the audio/visual aid – beware death by powerpoint! #kidlitchat
2:34 am davidhburton: Hmm, maybe I should re-write my kid’s book with the Nintendo DS in mind…. #kidlitchat
2:34 am dorothiar: RT @Buffyandrews: I think we are losing kids to all of the bells and whistles of modern technology. Hope we haven’t lost yet! #kidlitchat
2:34 am Buffyandrews: @cjomololu So good to know. Playing legos allows creativity, imagination. 2 many kids lack this. They don’t know how to imagine #kidlitchat
2:34 am emilytastic: @cjomololu Off topic, but my ex and I were talking last nite about how boys NEVER grow out of legos. I know many 20s who <3 them #kidlitchat
2:34 am Shelltex: Young people (most of them) can’t afford the current eReaders. #kidlitchat
2:34 am Sparrowbug: Agree RT @literaticat don’t see the majority of young readers that I know gravitating toward ebooks. Old people, yes. Teens, no. #kidlitchat
2:34 am SolomonInkwell: I think as the market price decreases for E-Readers making them more available, we’ll see them more and more with kids. #kidlitchat
2:34 am ElanaJ: @tiffanyaneal Yeah, I don’t think so either. Nor do I think the digital platform is bad. It’s all reading, which is good. #kidlitchat
2:34 am gregpincus: @keelyinkster I didn’t say that. And you clearly don’t know my kid! I think kids LOVE it. But not the youngest set. #kidlitchat
2:34 am RebeccAgent: Don’t know if anyone said it yet but I hope book reviews will be viewed as important to newspaper corps #kidlitchat
2:34 am cjomololu: @dawnmetcalf OMG! LOve it! #kidlitchat
2:34 am dawnmetcalf: @ElanaJ While the magic of the text is tantamount, I believe there are books that depend on physical act of turning the page. #kidlitchat
2:34 am YolaRamunno: @emilytastic I have a seventeen year-old nephew who owns one. #kidlitchat
2:34 am bonnieadamson: @DHeiligman Hahahaha–nope! #kidlitchat
2:34 am TracyClark_TLC: Gone are the days when teens had to be happy just with “adult” books. Think of it, what a great time to write YA! #kidlitchat
2:34 am MaryCalhounBrow: Sorry to miss the rest of #kidlitchat, but I have to tuck my little readers into bed.
2:34 am maggiedana: @literaticat In my family, it’s the kids (inc. teens) with e-readers and older folks with book-books. #kidlitchat
2:34 am dawnbonnevie: @PaulWHankins #kidlitchat Yeah, I’ve always wondered why there aren’t tv commercials for kids books.
2:35 am leewind: @Martychan13 recommending similar titles is a step, but it’s the unrelated titles we’ll miss. Maybe like stumble upon? #kidlitchat
2:35 am LaFabuliste: Are there TV commercials for adult books? #kidlitchat
2:35 am DeeScribe: RT @2KoP: Too many distractions on ereaders. Kids would rather game. Agree – mine see books for reading, computer for gaming #kidlitchat
2:35 am dawnmetcalf: @emilytastic …yet I /am/ concerned. I don’t want to offend or be disrespectful, but I want to be true to my story *more*. #kidlitchat
2:35 am EgmontUSA: @Shelltex but that will change. Most kids can’t afford iPhones, either. Still have them. #kidlitchat
2:35 am Buffyandrews: @RebeccAgent I still have a Sunday books page in my section, but my news space has been cut due to lacks of ads. Uugh! #kidlitchat
2:35 am johannaharness: Tactile & electronic experiences are different. I write w/ keyboard & pen. I read both screen & paper. I like options. #kidlitchat
2:35 am gregpincus: @tristanbancks I don’t know how it evolves. I just figure it will. But great storytelling will still be the key however it goes. #kidlitchat
2:35 am AmandaKMorgan: @literaticat You’re right. Our journalism class took a poll and I think it was like 20 to 1 preferring paper books… #kidlitchat
2:35 am YolaRamunno: @dawnbonnevie Maybe it’s too costly. #kidlitchat
2:35 am SolomonInkwell: If my niece told me she would read a book a week if I bought her an E-Reader, I’d…well…I’d tell her mom to get one! #kidlitchat
2:36 am PaulWHankins: @dawnbonnevie As books and movies become more connected, why haven’t we tapped this audience who arrives early to do bad trivia? #kidlitchat
2:36 am SarahAiglen: I read a book on a friend’s Kindle. Missed the *art* of a constructed book – choice of paper, typography, design, everything. #kidlitchat
2:36 am leewind: RT @ElanaJ: @tiffanyaneal Its all reading, which is good. <– YES! #kidlitchat
2:36 am TheAsianAngel: Imagine how much easier ARCs would be to carry at conventions! Just plug into a publishing station, download ARC & walk away. #kidlitchat
2:36 am JeffreyBeesler: RT @johannaharness: Tactile & electronic experiences are different. I write w/ keyboard & pen. I read both screen & paper. I like options. #kidlitchat
2:36 am skodobah: @Buffyandrews Oh, if the LA Times ever cut the Arts & Books section… #kidlitchat
2:36 am TracyClark_TLC: It gives me hope to see the growing and changing children’s sections in most bookstores. They’ve finally recognized! #kidlitchat

Thanks for hosting with Bonnie, and for the transcript, Greg. Not only is it great to be able to go back and read what I missed as discussion was flying by, it’s nice to be able to click on the twitter names and follow other involved members of the kidlit community!
You’re really doing a great service for all of us!
Namaste,
Lee
