Interference… and Four Ways to Deal

by Greg on June 29, 2009

interferenceToday, I had planned to write up a handful of blog posts, visit a dozen blogs, take care of my email, tweet and attend a Twitter chat, as well as spend time working on my Scholastic novel. The day did not go as planned. That’s not the first time it’s happened to me, nor will it be the last.

Here are four suggestions for how to attack days like this instead of letting them attack you:

  • Prioritize – know what HAS to be done on any given day. Not all tasks are equal. Sort it out and work top down.
  • Come up with techniques and plans for “interference days” in advance. For example, on days like this plan to do five tweets/retweets and then be done. Being able to quickly turn to a “plan B” saves time and angst on days where that is exactly what’s needed.
  • If you blog, have some content saved up that you can use if you feel you must post. It might not be timely, but it can still be good! Plus, having it ready and waiting gives peace of mind.
  • Finally, know that the world goes on if you don’t blog/tweet/update your status/whatever.

For some of you, blogging is your profession, and slightly different rules apply, of course. You don’t skip out on your job because of interference. Also, there’s a difference between making excuses and truly having obstacles. Still, life happens, and that’s okay.

The above are my ways of dealing with the interference, but I’m sure there are others. I hope you’ll let me know what helps you out on those rough days because extra tips are always good to have!
