Getting More Social

by Greg on February 8, 2010

This week, Google will be announcing tweaks to Gmail including one much like status updates, designed to make it more like social media rather than just email.

Whether or not Google’s changes prove sticky, it shows a continuing shift towards public and real-time communication like Twitter or Facebook’s updates.

These small updates can go a long way towards creating connections. Small insights or anecdotes help bridge the gap between electronic contact and seeming more human.

In general, these short updates aren’t where you’re going to be selling, though celebrating good news – a product release, a good review – could lead to sales.

But over time, the deeper connections you make are going to up your odds of happy accidents – sales, opportunities, and unexpected upsides.

I don’t use Gmail much, so this change to me is more about the continuing shift towards connectedness rather than a change in what I do. But what about you? Would you feed your FB updates to Gmail? Treat them differently? Or… is it just one more addition of “noise”?
