I check everyone who follows me and if they are a spambot or just feral I block them. I their twitstream shows they are posting something not just a sequence of advertisements or automated quotes or the like I'll follow them. If they are protected it is very rare that I will follow, unless they are known to me and even then I may not. I also rarely validate if people are using trutwit. I’m with you. Protecting your tweets does hamper your network growth, almost to the point that you are "hiding your content". The internet is changing and have a public stream is the new direction.
