Twitter has closed down a bunch of spam accounts tonight. You know the ones – they follow you and you go “huh?” or “ewwww!” If your count dropped tonight, it’s likely that you had spammers following you. Mashable has a fuller version of the story.
You can always “BLOCK” people when they follow you, and if you’re sure you’re dealing with a bot/spammer, it’s a good idea to do so. Per Twitter rules, if an account is blocked enough, it can be suspended. Also, you can follow Twitter’s @spam account then send a DM to them to report a spammer. Everyone pitching in like this does, in theory at least, help keep Twitter more spam free.
I am pleased to note that I did not lose any folks I was following, which I hope means I’m not following any spammers. Followers… well… I lost some, as I have not been diligently blocking this week. Good riddance, I say.

There seem to be a lot of lady spammers who have numbers after their names. So much so that if I see MaryLou1994, I automatically become suspicious. Another type of strange twitter follower is the kind with links about steam tractors. I’ve never actually linked in case of a nasty, but I’ve wondered!
