Doing a Twitter Background Check

by Greg on August 30, 2009

twitterIt’s very easy to customize the background of your Twitter account, whether you have skills with Photoshop or not. And I happen to think it’s time well spent.

This will not be a tutorial in how to change the background – for now, I’d suggest you search Google or check out this DesignReviver post with 13 tutorials and resources for creating a perfect background. Instead, I just wanted to touch on a few points about WHY you might want to change.

Twitter doesn’t give you a lot of chance to customize – you get a URL and a bio of 160 characters to play with. Twitter also has a default background and a handful of other pre-packaged ones (under Settings).

For starters, changing your background shows people that you’re paying attention to Twitter – you deemed it worth effort to go beyond the minimum. For some, this actually makes you more followable.

You can also inject some oomph into your profile by picking an interesting, fun, or personal image for everyone to see when they visit your page.

I use the background as a chance to share more information about myself. My very simple background (free via twitbacks.com) includes an email address as well as a bit more information than my bio.

The background is a place where you can work on your branding or promote a specific project. It’s another spot where you can tell the story you want to tell… always a good thing.

Know any particularly great Twitter backgrounds? I hope you’ll share ‘em with us all….
