A Question about Questions

by Greg on March 4, 2010

I’m prepping for the SCBWI-LA Writer’s Toolbox workshop I’m leading this Saturday called Unleashing the Power of Social Media for Writers and Illustrators.

It’s seven hours (or thereabouts) of fun, covering a whole lot of ground. And it leaves me with a question for y’all here – what are your big questions still? What areas would you like me to focus on more (or less)?

Social media changes so fast, and we all do such different things with it. Still, my take on recurring questions from consultations and workshops leads me to think…

  • Creating a strong platform
  • Twitter and the real-time web
  • Separating public and private lives
  • Efficiency/time management ideas

… are all subjects I should focus on. What else do you think I’m missing? Feel free to comment or email me directly if you’d like. I’ll take it all under advisement as we move forward together, learning and experimenting.

How abouthow to encourage people to share your postings on blogs? There are so many ‘sharing sites’ but which ones are the most advantageous to target?

I have a sharing widget on all my posts, but I don’t know how much use it’s getting. Some of my postings are quite popular (the linking shows up through my google alerts to popular forums, websites, blogs, etc) but I don’t know that people are ‘sharing’ via these widgets. Is there an easy way to tell without belonging to all of the sharing sites listed? (Yes this is probably a dumb question, but I’m a bit techno-challenged) :-)

We can’t do it all … so don’t even try! More and more I find myself going back to the comments you offered at KidLitCon09 – it’s about quality relationships, not numbers. It takes a plan … maybe even a diagram to understand how to get the pieces to feed each other … but I’m preachin’ to the choir.
